Last month, 2 outstanding Central School students, Aurora Godwin and Gabriella Magdaleno, represented Escambia River Electric Cooperative during the 2025 NRECA Youth Tour in Washington, D.C.

Aurora and Gabriella joined about 30 students from Florida co-ops and 1,000 to 1,500 students from across the United States for a week packed with hands-on learning and unforgettable experiences. The group explored the nation’s most iconic monuments and memorials, deepening their appreciation for American history and democracy.

A standout moment of the trip was a scenic dinner cruise on the Potomac River, where they enjoyed nighttime views of the city skyline. The students also took part in the energetic pin-trading tradition, connecting with peers from different states and building lasting friendships.

“My favorite part of the Youth Tour was visiting the natural history museum,” Aurora says. “I really enjoyed seeing it, especially with the new friends I made. I learned that no matter where you come from, you have a voice in our government, and the decisions made there impact all of us— even when we don’t realize it.

“This trip showed me that we can become anything we want to be. I’m grateful for the friendships, memories, and experiences this trip gave me.”

In visits with members of Congress and legislative staff, Aurora and Gabriella gained firsthand insight into how government operates and had the opportunity to voice concerns important to rural youth. These conversations underscored the importance of civic engagement and showed how even young voices can influence public policy.

“My biggest takeaway from this trip has been to not be afraid to try new things and always make an effort to meet new people and cultivate friendships wherever I go in life,” Gabriella says. “I learned that I am stronger and braver than I know, and I can do big things with the support of my family and community.”

The NRECA Youth Tour is more than a sightseeing trip—it’s a leadership experience. EREC is proud to support the development of tomorrow’s leaders. Aurora and Gabriella exemplified enthusiasm, curiosity, and integrity as they represented our community and gained invaluable insights into the power of cooperation and citizenship.
